Wonderground Single Vineyard Marananga Malbec

$35.00

Malbec may seem like an outsider in the Barossa Valley but it has been grown here since the first collections of cuttings arrived in the mid-1800's.

Grown just around the corner on Luke’s, Marananga, Ironstone Ridge vineyard, a chance tasting of the fruit on the vine led to a swift decision and a delicious addition to the Wonderground range.

Traditional winemaking and a short maturation in large, seasoned French Oak barrels to preserve the bright, juicy pomegranate fruit.

Only 520 cases produced.

Winemaker’s Notes
Malbec may seem like an outsider in the Barossa Valley but it has been grown here since the first collections of cuttings arrived in the min-1800's. Grown on the Ironstone Ridge vineyard in Marananga, a chance tasting the fruit on the vine led to a swift decision and a delicious addition to the Wonderground range. Fermented with indigenous yeast on skins for a short, 3-day period due to the intensity of the grapes. Basket pressed and matured for 10 months in older French oak puncheons. Despite the brief time fermenting on skins the colour and intensity of this wine is impressive. This patch of Malbec is relatively young but shows great promise in the mineral rich clay soils of their home in Marananga.
Dark, brooding and expressive with hedgerow berries and herbs. Rich, juicy with a complex fresh finish.

The 2023 Wonderground Malbec leads with coffee grounds and blackberry, pink peppercorn and black tea. The nose is laden with sumptuous notes of cherry and bramble, and the wine in the mouth expounds the same virtues. Blood plum and dusty, earthy tannins cascade over the palate. The ironstone gravels lend a ferruginous note to the tannins, which is most welcome. This is a very impressive wine; it doesn't drink like a warm-climate wine, rather it has cooling minerality and leafy detail within. It is good. - Erin Larkin
